Abstract

In this paper, I discuss some of the challenges in teaching Western music history in my institution. It is in many ways an exceptional teaching and learning environment, rich in opportunities for both instructors and students. But there are also difficulties, mainly in teaching language-based subjects. They result in part from the nature of the environment, but may also stem from a wider problem of literacy, in a broad sense, and changing attitudes towards reading.
