Welcome to the online proposal submission system.

Detailed instructions

Thank you for considering a proposal submission for the 2018 Annual Meeting of the American Musicological Society to be held from Thursday, 1 November, to Sunday, 4 November.

What follows will permit you to submit your proposal online. Please follow the instructions here and in the published Call for Proposals carefully. Proposals that do not follow the guidelines will not be considered.

If you are a not a member of the AMS, you may register to submit a proposal. (While there is no membership restriction to submit a proposal, those who present papers at the meeting must be current members.) After registration, you will be given a unique random password, which will be sent to an e-mail address that you provide us. Save the e-mail we send you--this will provide information so that you can keep logging in to update your submission until the deadline (5 p.m. EST, Jan. 17, 2017). If you are a member of the AMS, please log in to the AMS web site before proceeding.

Submitting your proposal

  • When your proposal is ready, log in to the system either as an AMS member or as a non-member (links are in the header and at the bottom of this page). You will first be asked to identify the type of proposal you are submitting: Individual Proposal, Poster Proposal, Formal Session, Evening Panel, Alternative Format Session, or Seminar Paper Proposal. Please select the appropriate type. (Should you need to change this parameter, send your request to rjudd@ams-net.org.)

  • Step 1: For Individual, Poster, and Seminar Paper Proposals, enter the text of your title and proposal in the fields provided. Your proposal will be uploaded upon completion of the process. There is a 350-word limit.

  • For formal sessions, one person, the organizer, is to submit the requisite proposals: a 350-word rationale for the formal session, and three separate proposals. Formal session organizers are prompted to provide session participant information in the submission process.

Evening panel and Alternative Format session organizers similarly submit their proposal in the text field provided. There is a 500-word limit.

To enter your proposal text: prepare your proposal as plain text (e.g., save as .txt file using a word processor such as MS Word). Use characters with diacriticals or intuitive orthography [e.g., e` for è] as necessary. _Indicate italics like this_. Provide the title using title case (Chicago Manual of Style rules); do not submit your title in all caps. When your proposal is ready, select, copy, and paste into the field provided. Separate paragraphs with a carriage return. Please do not indent paragraphs. If submitting an Individual Proposal, kindly provide from one to five keywords in the space provided that indicate the topic(s) of the proposal. This information will be used by the Program Committee when they assemble sessions for the final program.

  • Step 2: enter audio-visual requests in the space provided. Accurate and complete audio-visual information enables effective logistical organization; thank you in advance for helping with this.

  • Final step: click the "Finish" button. Your proposal will be assigned a reference number and you will receive e-mail confirmation. You may return at any time prior to the deadline to emend your submission.

Emending your submission

You may wish to emend the information provided or change the proposal file itself. To do so: Log in to the submission system. The process of emending an abstract is the same as the original submission process, except that the submission form will be automatically filled in with the answers that you gave previously--you don't have to change an answer if you don't want to.

  • When you reach the final step and press "Finish" you will be sent an email confirming that your abstract has been emended.

Withdrawing a proposal

If you wish to withdraw your proposal, please send an email to the AMS.
