The Eugene K. Wolf Travel Fund is intended to encourage and assist
Ph.D. candidates in all fields of musical scholarship to travel
to Europe to for their dissertation work. The fund awards one or
more travel grants each year to students attending North American
universities who have completed all requirements except the dissertation
for the Ph.D. See

Eugene Wolf (1939–2002) was professor of music at the University
of Pennsylvania from 1973 until his retirement in 1998. Prior to
that time he had taught at Syracuse University and over the course
of his career was also visiting professor at Columbia, Princeton,
UNC, and Bryn Mawr. He held the BA in trombone from Eastman (1961)
and the MA and PhD from NYU (1964, 1972).
He was the leading expert of his generation on the origins, style,
and sources of the 18th-century symphony. His article on "A
Newly Identified Complex of Manuscripts from Mannheim," written
jointly with his wife Jean K. Wolf, won the 1975 Alfred Einstein
prize. His definitive treatment, Manuscripts from Mannheim, ca.
1730-1778, A Study in the Methodology of Musical Source Research
(2002) was published just before his death. In the 1990s, working
with the William Howard Doane collection of music manuscripts, Wolf
identified the missing autograph of Mozart's C-Minor Fantasia and
Sonata (K. 475/457) and rare manuscripts of works by Haydn and Meyerbeer.
He was a Rockefeller Fellow (1966–67) and a Guggenheim Fellow
(1975–76) and held fellowships from the NEH and ACLS. Additionally
he was American advisor to the European Science Foundation, Strasbourg,
France, for the project "Musical Life in Europe 1600-1900."
In 2002, Wolf was named first honorary member of the Society for
Eighteenth-Century Music, recognizing his lifetime achievement.
