The Harold Powers World Travel Fund is intended to encourage and assist Ph.D. candidates, post-doctoral scholars, and junior faculty in all fields of musical scholarship to travel anywhere in the world to carry out the necessary work for their dissertation, article, or monograph. The selection committee of three scholars appointed by the president will include at least one member with knowledge of non-Western music. Graduate students who apply shall have completed all of their degree requirements except the dissertation. The fund will award up to three grants per year.
The fund honors Harry Powers (1928-2007) the polymathic scholar and distinguished longtime AMS member whose publications ranged from music and language to medieval mode to Indian music to Puccini, and whose interests were wider still--but always with the communicative aspects of music at their base. Powers earned the Ph.D. in musicology from Princeton in 1959, then taught at Harvard for two years and the University of Pennsylvania for 12. He joined the Princeton faculty in 1973, retiring in 2001 after having been named Scheide Professor of Music in 1995. He was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a corresponding fellow of the British Academy.
