Howard Mayer Brown Fellowships

for historically under-represented minorities

Brown

The fellowship was established by friends of Howard Mayer Brown on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday. Intended to increase the presence of minority scholars and teachers in musicology, it supports one year of graduate work for a student at a North American university who is a member of a group historically under-represented in the discipline, including, in the U.S., African Americans, Native Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Asian Americans, and, in Canada, visible minorities. See list of fellows.

Howard Mayer Brown (1930–93), the eminent scholar of medieval and Renaissance music, held three degrees from Harvard (BA 1951, MA 1954, PhD 1959), where he studied musicology with Otto Gombosi and composition with Walter Piston. After teaching at Wellesley College (1958-60), he joined the faculty at the University of Chicago in 1967. He also taught at King’s College, London (1972-74). Brown’s leadership of the University of Chicago Collegium Musicum established the organization as a model of its kind among American universities. His extensive collection of some 1,700 microfilms of early manuscript and printed works is at the Newberry Library, Chicago.

Databases list over 150 works written, edited, or introduced by Howard Brown. Among those most routinely consulted are Music in the French Secular Theater, 1400-1550 (1963), Instrumental Music Printed Before 1600: A Bibliography (1965), the Prentice Hall Music in the Renaissance (1976), Renaissance Music in Facsimile (29 vols, ed. with Frank d’Accone and Jessie Ann Owens ), the Norton Performance Practice volumes (ed. with Stanley Sadie, 1990), and Josquin’s Secular Works for Three Voices (ed. with Jaap van Benthem, new Josquin edn., 1991). A Florentine Chansonnier from the Time of Lorenzo the Magnificent won the 1984 Kinkeldey Prize.
