Call for Papers

Annual Meeting of the South-Central Chapter of the American Musicological Society

March 23-24, 2018.

Deadline for Submissions: Sunday, January 21, 2018.

The South-Central Chapter of the American Musicological Society (AMS-SC) is pleased to announce its 2018 Annual Meeting, to be hosted by Warren Wilson College in Asheville, NC. The meeting will begin on the morning of Friday, March 23, and will conclude by noon on Saturday, March 24. The keynote event will honor the centennial of Cecil Sharp's famous visits to Western North Carolina in 1916-18 to research and collect from local ballad singers, featuring a program by National Heritage Award recipient Sheila Kay Adams, an expert performer and authority on the region's ballad singing.

Proposals for presentations, special sessions, papers with a performance component, poster presentations (new!), and panel discussions in all areas of scholarship related to music are solicited.

Session presentations will be limited to twenty minutes, with an additional ten minutes allotted for questions and discussion. Proposals should include an abstract of no more than 350 words, suitable for publication in the conference program. Abstracts should be concise but thorough and clearly indicate the scope of your research, the research methods employed, and your conclusions.

Submission Instructions:

Proposals should consist of a single Microsoft Word or PDF document that includes no identifying information but only the title, abstract, and format (paper, poster, lecture recital, etc.) of the presentation. Attach the proposal to an email that gives the presenter's full contact information, presentation title, A/V requirements, and a short bio (100 words or less). For a proposal submitted by a student, a separate email message from an adviser or other faculty member should be sent to the Program Committee Chair to verify student status. Student members of the AMS-SC whose abstracts are selected by the program committee will be eligible to compete in the Rey M. Longyear Student Paper Competition. This award, given in memory of Professor Longyear, will be announced at the chapter meeting.

Please email your proposal to Program Committee Chair César Leal at no later than Sunday, January 21, 2018. Receipt of your submission will be acknowledged via an email reply.

Further information on the 2018 meeting will be available on the Chapter’s website:
