Action taken by the AMS Board of Directors
14 December 2017
The Society categorically condemns all forms of sexual harassment and misconduct. In light
of the sanctions that have been imposed on D. Kern Holoman by the University of California,
Davis, and to which he agreed, the Board of Directors of the American Musicological Society
has unanimously decided to rescind his status of Honorary Member of the Society, effective
immediately.
The Board’s unprecedented action was not taken lightly, and reflects the seriousness of the
present situation. This is especially difficult and painful considering the enormous efforts on
behalf of the Society that Professor Holoman has undertaken over a period of more than
three decades.
In the coming weeks the Board will be considering further proactive steps the Society can
take to combat sexual misconduct and better protect and restore victims.
